Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

The month of March was Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. As part of ECTC’s efforts to Cultivate Inclusion, we invited the children of Open Sesame Day Care in Sterling to explore Art Therapy with us. The children enjoyed exploring the Sensory Art and Music Center’s various sights and sounds; making marble art paintings in the Fine Arts Center; and playing games under the multi-colored parachute.

Timber Lake Playhouse in Mount Carroll Hosts Theatre Workshops for Those with Special Needs

TLP Hosts Theatre Workshops
Normally, Timber Lake Playhouse (TLP) in Mount Carroll, Illinois sits dormant in the winter. The lively summer theatre often gets questions such as “What goes on at Timber Lake Playhouse during the winter?” This year, however, TLP administrative staff and Board of Directors, in celebration of the 50th Anniversary and a way to begin the expansion of its Magic Owl Educational Programming, decided to go into the community and teach theatre workshops at two local non-profit special needs organizations.

“Before becoming Managing Director at Timber Lake Playhouse, I worked with organizations that supported individuals with special needs and had taught theatre workshops at The Centers for Habilitation (TCH) in Tempe, AZ,” said Melissa Mattingly Parsons. Parsons met with Jon Murray from Rolling Hills Progress Center in Lanark and Karla Belzer at Exceptional Care & Training Center in Sterling to do theatre workshops for the holiday season. The workshops consisted of going into each facility, getting to know the individuals in each facility, and writing a play based on their preferences and abilities. Each organization gave its input on the script, performed on December 23, 2010, at Rolling Hills Progress Center and January 26, 2011, at Exceptional Care & Training Center.

“What is important about working with these types of organizations is that each individual can take many things from the workshops. They use the theatrical arts to work on skills such as vocal exercises, range of motion, reading, working together with peers, and arts and crafts. Individuals who were not performing were able to work on costumes, props, and decorations for the play. A project like this enables an organization’s individuals, staff, and administrators to work to together and feel good about what they present, “ Parsons said. “We took that idea a step further by also bridging three organizations within the community.” Rolling Hills employees who had performed the play in December were able to participate in the performance at Exceptional Care & Training Center.

The play that was presented at both organizations, titled Everyday Holidays, included songs with lyrics such as “The holidays the time we share in winter or in spring…the holidays are everyday with all the joy you bring.” Justin Harris, Program Coordinator at TCH, wrote the music to the lyrics of the songs from the play.

Parsons said that it is important when writing a play for these organizations to have the theme that while we all have differences, we all are human beings. Rolling Hills Progress Center’s Executive Director Peter Hermes stated, “People with developmental disabilities want what everyone else wants, the chance to contribute to their family, their society and to enrich their own life.”

Parents and guardians were invited to the performances and in some cases drove several states away to attend. “It was a great program and we appreciated all the work that went into it,” stated one of the parents of an individual at Exceptional Care & Training Center.

Karla Belzer, Program Director at Exceptional Care & Training Center said, "Our residents have never had an opportunity in their life to ‘perform.’ This workshop gave them their first chance to be part of a production - to experience applause. We had over 50 parents and guardians attend the performance, which provided them a first opportunity as well: a chance to see their child perform. It was truly and amazing experience that has our residents smiling to this day."

All three organizations feel these types of partnerships are important for the community. Building relationships like these educates the public about programs for individuals with special needs as well as the arts; both necessary to the community and typically among the first programs cut in federal and state budgets.

HCCI Recognizes “Heroes in Long Term Care”

Gwen Justice
During May 2011, as part of National Nursing Home Week, the Health Care Council of Illinois (HCCI) recognized the “heroes” in Illinois facilities – those dedicated and caring staff members and residents who have made meaningful contributions to the lives of their facilities. This year, more than 90 individuals were honored for their commitment, selflessness and caring. ECTC is pleased to announce that Gwen Justice, Director of Nursing was among those being honored. Congratulations, Gwen!

Gwen Justice — Director of Nursing
Exceptional Care & Training Center’s Employee of the Year 2010

Gwen Justice…puts EXCEPTIONAL in Exceptional Care & Training Center!

Being Director of Nursing for ECTC (1998-2006 and 2009-Present), Gwen does all that is outlined in her job description…she trains, evaluates, and supervises personnel, oversees resident care, monitors medical records and ensures infection control compliance, but Gwen does it by keeping the Main Thing the Main Thing.

"One of the best DONs in the area - hands down!"
—Direct Care Staff

Gwen sets an example. Not only does Gwen want to be a better employee/nurse, Gwen wants staff to strive to be their best too. Gwen is a passionate teacher. She provides employees with the knowledge and tools to do the job. She encourages staff to succeed – professionally and personally. It is not uncommon to see Gwen in the facility at “odd” hours to inspect what she expects or to give a shoulder to lean on.

Gwen's passion for staff development is only surpassed by her passion to provide quality care to each resident. Gwen has personally lifted, bathed, changed, treated and assessed each and every resident. She shares in the joy of a resident learning a new skill. She stays at the bedside of a dying resident. (She has made delicious cream of wheat on our "blizzard day".) She vigilantly advocates to doctors when she knows something is “just not right.” She has compassionately guided family members to resources that would help them make difficult decisions. She has put her arms around a resident and laughed together. She truly cares for each resident and is wholly invested in his/her well-being. It is that simple.

Gwen goes Above and Beyond. Gwen is a registered nurse (a qualification for the position) but on her own volition went on to get her BSN, to participate in the Developmental Disabilities Nurse Association and to become a Qualified Support Professional. She did this in order to keep abreast of trends and standards of practice and to continuously strive to be a better nurse for our unique skilled care facility.

Preaching and following the Do Right Rule, Gwen is a great leader/role model. She treats everyone with dignity and respect in all of her interactions.

"Gwen's welcoming attitude meant the world to me when I first started and she has continued to give me positive feedback and encouragement during some difficult and trying times. She has been a tremendous help to me and I truly enjoy working with her." —Supervisor

It has been said, "People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care." Residents, staff and families know Gwen cares. Gwen is an extraordinary person.
