"WE COULD
NEVER LEARN TO BE BRAVE AND PATIENT, IF THERE WERE ONLY JOY IN THE WORLD." -HELEN KELLER
Exceptional Care & Training Center is a well-designed residence for individuals with developmental disabilities. Our skilled staff serves
as an extended family whose caring, concern and attention help to provide the very best possible home for our residents. The resident’s
home is a place for comfort, love and skilled care. Social and recreational skills are enhanced through programs such as family-style dining,
grooming and hygiene, choosing daily wardrobe and/or self-medication development.
ECTC’s residential facility is licensed by Illinois Department of Public Health as a Skilled Pediatric Facility. ECTC’s day training
program is licensed by Illinois Department of Human Services.
Day Training
ECTC's day training program operates 255 days per year. Hours are 10 AM to 4 PM. It is open to residents of the community, as well as those residing
at ECTC. Currently, half of ECTC's residents attend the on-campus day training program, with the remaining people attending our separate off-site
program, Building Bridges, which was opened in March 2001.
The program's intent is to: (1) continue to expand upon previously acquired skills of each person served; (2) work toward independent living
through use of interdisciplinary skill training; (3) develop individualized program plans that have functional goals rather than task-oriented
goals;(4) provide functional recreational activities; and (5) provide community support.
Due to the functioning levels of our clients, we have specialized equipment at each site that assists our trainers in assuring that each skill
is taught in a way that is understandable for the persons served. Classrooms are equipped with various items that provide visual, auditory and
tactile stimulation to focus on sensory, motor, cognitive, language, activities of daily living and social skill development.
Building Bridges offers more opportunity for community integration for program participants as the location is near several businesses. Since
Building Bridges is directly affiliated with ECTC, there is continuity of care between the facilities.
Recreational Activites
We recognize that everyone likes to have a good time. We have a recreational program that is planne d by our Activity Department. Group and one-to-one
activities are scheduled. Examples include, but are not limited to: bingo, bowling, storytelling, and walks. Community outings include visits
to the park to listen to community bands, shopping at a variety of stores, going out to movies, taking country drives or participating in community
events and attractions. Our residents enjoy a number of quiet activities in-house, such as the aviary in the our lobby. These diverse opportunities
help to broaden our residents' awareness and interest in their environment.
